Fissure was commissioned by Skanska Architects in partnership with Brooks Running Shoe Company as part of Seattle's deep green initiative. This lobby sculpture seeks to foster a living relationship between Stone 34 and its occupants. The growth of golden foliage is in practice a visual analog of an environmental data point. Each of the 82 flowers bloom or close in time with the energy usage of Stone 34. As the building reaches its energy goals Fissure will slowly blossom, creating a real time barometer for the energy consumption of the building. It is my hope that the occupants of Stone 34 will be able to observe Fissure and modulate their behavior with the intent of creating a more sustainable environment here and at home.
